FAQs

How is the Embrace different from a structured carrier or a baby wrap?
The Embrace sits deliberately between the two. It merges the cosiness of a soft wrap with the simplicity of a carrier as soft and close as a wrap, but secured with just three buckles rather than requiring any wrapping or tying. The Embrace is made from a slightly stretchy, supportive, lightweight knit fabric, whereas other Ergobaby structured carriers like the Omni Deluxe and Omni Classic are made from mesh — the knit gives the Embrace a warmer, more snug feeling that many parents find especially comforting for newborns in the early weeks. It is also considerably lighter and slimmer than a structured carrier, weighing just 480grams, which makes it easy to stash in a nappy bag and pull on quickly. The trade-off is that it is designed for the newborn and infant phase only, rather than carrying through to toddlerhood
From what age and weight can I use it, and when does my baby outgrow it?
The Embrace is suitable from birth a minimum weight of 3.2kg and minimum height of 50.8cm through to approximately 11.3kg, which is typically around 12–18 months. The carrier adapts to your newborn's smaller size through a specific setup: in Newborn Mode, the waistbelt is folded inwards twice, shortening the back panel and narrowing the seat width to fit a smaller baby snugly. As your baby grows, you move to Baby Mode — Facing In from around two months, and Baby Mode — Facing Out once your baby has strong head and neck control and is taller than 66cm, typically around 5–6 months. It is designed as a dedicated newborn and infant carrier, so families who want to continue babywearing into toddlerhood will typically pair it with an Omni Classic or Omni Deluxe for longer-term use
Is it genuinely easy to put on and can one parent manage it solo?
Yes simplicity is the Embrace's defining feature. It doesn't require any complicated wrapping or tying, and snaps on in three clicks, making it one of the fastest carriers to get on and off independently. This matters enormously in the early newborn weeks when you're often trying to settle a crying baby quickly, or when you need to transfer a sleeping baby out of the carrier without waking them. The waistbelt should be secured high and tight on the torso, with the product labels always on the inside and the buckle facing out — a small but useful detail that helps first-time users orient the carrier correctly. Ergobaby also provides detailed instructional videos for each carry mode, which parents consistently rate as helpful when getting comfortable with newborn positioning
Is it safe for my baby's hips and spine?
The Embrace has been recognised by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute for hip-healthy positioning, placing baby in the natural spread-squat or M-position where the knees are at or above hip level and the spine is gently rounded the same ergonomic principle used across all Ergobaby carriers. The carrier features padded neck support to support your baby's head and neck, and the knit fabric holds baby close against the parent's body, which encourages the correct slightly rounded spine posture that mirrors how a newborn naturally lies. One important safety note: you should never carry your baby facing out until specific developmental milestones are met — strong head and neck control and sufficient height and you should always ensure baby's face and chin clear the top of the panel and their airway is unobstructed during every carry
What fabric options are available, and is it machine washable?
The Embrace is available in the original SoftKnit, which is a thick, double-knit jersey-like fabric that feels warm and womb-like against a newborn's skin. The fabric is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, confirming it is free from harmful substances, and is machine washable. To wash, use mild detergent free of bleach, perfumes, dyes, chlorine, or optical brighteners, and machine wash cold at 30°C. Air dry rather than tumble dry, and wash the carrier alone or inside a mesh laundry bag to protect the knit fabric from snagging against zippers or Velcro from other garments. Using a drool bib or teething pads on the shoulder straps during daily use also reduces how often the whole carrier needs washing
