FAQs

What exactly is a hip seat, and how is it different from a regular carrier?
The Alta Hip Seat has a wide waistband with a padded, shelf-like seat that baby sits on while you hold them with one arm so instead of carrying a growing baby in your arms or on your hip unsupported, you can rest them in the seat with significantly less strain on your arms and back. This is the mode parents reach for around the house quick transitions, frequent ups and downs, short trips from room to room where buckling into a full carrier every time isn't practical. For hands-free carry, the hip seat converts into a full carrier by attaching the removable back panel with shoulder straps, giving you a structured, hands-free option for longer outings. It's a genuinely two-in-one product, and the ability to switch between modes in seconds is what makes it particularly useful in the toddler phase when your child wants to be held one moment and walking the next
From what age and weight can I use it, and is it suitable for newborns?
The Alta Hip Seat is designed to be used starting at a minimum weight of 5.4kg, from around 4 months it is not suitable for newborns, and cannot be used with an infant insert. The waistband adjusts from 65cm to 140cm, and the carrier supports up to 20kg suitable from around 4 months through to approximately 48 months. The reason it starts at 4 months is that the hip seat position requires your baby to have good head and neck control. It is therefore designed as a second carrier for families who already have a newborn carrier like the Embrace, or as a standalone product for parents who are entering babywearing for the first time at the older baby and toddler stage
What carry positions are available and when can I use each one?
With the hip seat only, baby can be carried on the hip and in the front both parent facing and outward facing. With the back panel attached, baby can be carried hands-free on the back, and in the front facing both in and out. The positions unlock progressively with development rather than just age: from around 4 months with good head and neck control, the front carry positions using the full carrier panel are available; from around 6 months when baby can sit unassisted, back carry becomes available. Facing out is appropriate once your baby has strong head and neck control with their chin clearly above the carrier panel and if baby becomes sleepy or shows signs of overstimulation in the outward facing position, turn them around to face you immediately
Will it be comfortable for me, and does it fit both parents?
You can wear the Alta with shoulder straps crossed on your back or in parallel H-back configuration in the front carry positions — crossed or parallel is individual comfort preference, and crossed straps let you position them where they're most comfortable for your specific shoulder width. It is also appreciated by parents with less mobility, as all the buckling and fastening is done at the front — there's no reaching behind to fasten a chest strap. The waistband's generous adjustment range means it fits a very wide range of body types, and because the adjustment is quick and easy at the front, two parents of different sizes can swap the carrier between them without a lengthy reconfiguration. The hip seat shelf itself redistributes your baby's weight to your core rather than your arms, which is the primary reason parents find it so much less fatiguing for the frequent picking-up-and-putting-down phase of toddlerhood
Is it machine washable, and what is the foam seat made from?
Yes, the Alta Hip Seat is machine washable. Before washing, remove the foam seat base and fasten all buckles and hook-and-loop fasteners. Use mild detergent free of bleach, perfumes, dyes, chlorine, or optical brighteners. Air dry rather than tumble dry, and wash the carrier alone or in a mesh laundry bag to protect the mesh fabric. The Cool Air Mesh version is made from 100% polyester, and the removable foam seat is made from EPP — expanded polypropylene. None of the materials include flame retardants. EPP is the same lightweight, impact-resistant foam used in bicycle helmets and protective packaging — it provides the rigid shelf structure that makes the hip seat functional, and the fact that it's removable before washing means the foam's integrity is preserved over time
